The Honey and Cider Vinegar Morning Tonic, Done Properly
Al Safa HoneyOctober 19, 20265 min read

Two teaspoons of raw honey, two teaspoons of cider vinegar, a glass of warm water, every morning. The recipe appears in American farmhouse kitchens, Appalachian folk tradition and half the wellness internet. It is worth doing properly — and worth knowing what the honey is really for.
What the honey is doing in the glass
Primarily, making the vinegar drinkable. Raw cider vinegar alone is harsh enough that most people abandon the habit within a week. Honey balances the acidity into something you will actually finish.
It also brings its own trace minerals, natural pollen and aromatic compounds, which is why a wildflower honey makes a noticeably more interesting glass than a filtered supermarket bottle.
The part nobody mentions: your enamel
Vinegar is acidic, and acid erodes tooth enamel. This is the one genuine, well-documented risk of the ritual and it is entirely avoidable.
Always dilute in a full glass of water, drink it reasonably promptly rather than sipping over an hour, rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards, and wait at least thirty minutes before brushing — brushing softened enamel does the damage.
Where we draw the line on claims
This tonic has been credited with everything from weight loss to blood pressure control. We are not going to repeat any of it. The honest version: it is a pleasant, cheap, two-ingredient morning habit made of real food.
If you are managing a medical condition or taking medication, ask your doctor before adding a daily acidic drink. That is not a disclaimer, it is sensible.
Why wildflower
Pure Raw Wildflower Honey has the body and layered meadow character to stand up to cider vinegar without disappearing — a pale citrus honey is simply overpowered.
It is also one of our more economical harvests, which matters for anything you drink every single morning.
The ritual
The Morning Cider & Wildflower Glass
Mixed in under a minute. The dilution and the rinse are not optional.
- 1Fill a tall glass with warm — not hot — water.
- 2Stir in 2 teaspoons of Pure Raw Wildflower Honey until fully dissolved.
- 3Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of raw apple cider vinegar. Start at one; work up only if you like it.
- 4Drink it steadily rather than sipping all morning, rinse your mouth with plain water, and wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.
Questions we get asked
- How much honey and vinegar should I use?
- A common ratio is 2 teaspoons of raw honey to 1 or 2 teaspoons of cider vinegar in a full glass of warm water. Start at the lower end of the vinegar.
- Does cider vinegar damage your teeth?
- Undiluted or frequently sipped vinegar can erode enamel. Always dilute in a full glass, rinse with plain water afterwards, and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.
- Should the water be hot?
- No. Warm and comfortable to drink. Hot water degrades the natural enzymes and aromatics in raw honey.
