Honey for Scars: Can It Fade Old Marks or Help New Ones?
Honey for scars is a common DIY skin care idea. People apply honey masks hoping to fade acne marks, surgical scars or old injuries. The research picture is mixed. Medical honey dressings may support healing of some wounds, which could influence how they scar, but there is little evidence that honey fades established scars. This article explains how scars form, what research on honey for scars actually covers, and what dermatologists recommend to minimize scarring. For wound care, see honey for wound healing.

How scars form
When skin is injured deeply enough, the body repairs it with collagen fibers. This new tissue looks and feels different from the surrounding skin. Scars may be flat, raised (hypertrophic or keloid), sunken (like some acne scars) or discolored.
Most scars fade and flatten over a year or two as collagen remodels. Genetics, location, skin type, infection and how the wound is cared for all affect the final result.
What research on honey for scars covers
Most research involves honey as a wound dressing rather than a scar treatment. The Cochrane review on honey for wounds found honey dressings healed some burns faster than conventional dressings. Faster healing and lower infection risk can influence how a wound scars, but the review did not measure scar appearance as a main outcome.
A few small studies have compared honey with other dressings after surgery or skin graft donor sites and reported cosmetic outcomes, with mixed results.
Can honey fade old scars?
There is no good evidence that applying honey to an established scar makes it fade. Once collagen has formed and matured, surface treatments like honey cannot change its structure much.
Honey masks may make the surrounding skin feel softer because honey is a humectant, which could make a scar look slightly less noticeable for a short time, but this is a cosmetic effect.
| Scar type | Honey likely to help? | Proven options |
|---|---|---|
| New wound (healing) | Medical honey dressings may support healing | Moist wound care, covering |
| Flat, mature scar | Unlikely | Time, sun protection, makeup |
| Raised or keloid scar | No evidence | Silicone gel, steroid injections |
| Acne scars | No evidence | Lasers, microneedling, fillers |
What dermatologists recommend
The American Academy of Dermatology's wound care tips to minimize scarring include:
- Keep the wound clean with mild soap and water.
- Apply petroleum jelly to keep it moist.
- Cover with a bandage and change it daily.
- Use silicone gel sheets after the wound closes for some scars.
- Protect healing skin from the sun.
Honey for scars and kitchen honey
Do not put kitchen honey on an open wound. It is not sterile. If you are interested in honey for wound care, ask a doctor or pharmacist about sterile medical honey products. Our article on medical grade honey explains why.
Once a wound has fully closed, a honey face mask on intact skin is generally gentle, though patch testing is wise.
Acne marks versus acne scars
Many people call the dark or red spots left after a pimple scars, but these are often post-inflammatory marks that fade on their own over months. True acne scars change the skin's texture.
Sunscreen helps marks fade faster. Our article on honey for dark spots discusses pigmentation.
Sun protection matters most
New scars darken easily in sunlight. Using broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, or keeping scars covered, is one of the simplest ways to help them fade evenly.
When to see a dermatologist
See a dermatologist if a scar is raised, growing, itchy, painful, limits movement, or bothers you. Treatments include silicone, steroid injections, laser therapy, microneedling and surgical revision. Early treatment of raised scars often works better.
Honey for scars in traditional remedies
Honey has been mixed with ingredients like lemon, turmeric or aloe in traditional scar remedies. Lemon juice can irritate skin and increase sun sensitivity, so it is best avoided on scars. Aloe is gentle for many people.
Patch test first
Before using honey on your skin, apply a little to the inner arm and wait 24 hours. People with pollen or bee product allergies can react. Our article on honey allergy explains the signs.
Realistic expectations
Honey for scars is best thought of as a gentle skin care ingredient, not a scar treatment. For the best scar outcome, focus on good wound care early on, sun protection and professional treatment when needed.
Honey for scars after surgery
After surgery, your surgeon will give specific wound care instructions. Some clinics use medical honey dressings on certain wounds, while most use standard dressings, skin glue or strips. Follow those instructions rather than adding home remedies, since infection is the biggest threat to a good scar.
Once stitches are out and the wound has fully closed, ask your surgeon about silicone gel or sheets, which have the best evidence for flattening raised surgical scars.
Massage and time
Gentle scar massage, once a wound is fully healed, may help soften some scars. Most scars also improve significantly on their own over 12 to 18 months as collagen reorganizes. Patience is part of every scar plan.
