What Does Al Safa Mean? The Arabic Word Behind Our Name
Al Safa HoneyOctober 17, 20264 min read

People ask us about the name almost as often as they ask about the honey. Al Safa is Arabic, and its meaning is simple: purity, clearness, a state with nothing clouding it. It is a word about what is left when everything unnecessary has been taken away, which is a fair description of what we want in a jar.
The word itself
Al Safa is written الصفا in Arabic. "Al" is the article "the", and "safa" means purity, clearness or serenity. Put together, it reads as "the purity" or "the clarity".
In everyday Arabic the word is used for clear water, a cloudless sky and a calm, untroubled mind. It describes something that is clean all the way through, not just on the surface.
How to say it
Most English speakers say "al SAH-fah", and that is perfectly fine. In Arabic the "l" blends into the "s" that follows it, so a native speaker usually says something closer to "as-SAH-fa".
Either way, the stress falls on the first syllable of Safa.
The family of words around it
Arabic builds words from roots, and safa comes from the root ṣ-f-w, which carries the idea of being clear and free of anything mixed in. The same root gives sāfī, meaning pure or unmixed, often said of water or a clear voice.
It also gives taṣfiya, the act of straining or clarifying something. That one feels close to home: our honey is strained of wax and nothing else, so what you taste is what the bees made.
The word travelled, too. Through Persian and Turkish it became sefa or safa, meaning ease, pleasure and good company, and older Turkish greetings still welcome a guest with it.
Why we chose it
We chose Al Safa because it is not just any kind of pure. In English, pure usually means "nothing added", a box ticked on a label. The Arabic word goes further. Safa is purity you can see through: water so clear you can count the stones at the bottom, a sky with no cloud in it, a heart with nothing troubling it.
It is purity that is whole, inside and out, and that is the feeling we wanted on every jar.
Why purity matters to us
We love that our honey is pure because purity is what keeps the good of it. Raw honey that has not been heated or finely filtered keeps its natural enzymes, its pollen and the plant compounds, like antioxidants, that give each flower its color and taste.
That is the honey people have valued for thousands of years, and it only stays that way if nothing is done to it. Our jars are single ingredients: no syrups, no blending agents, no heat treatment for shelf clarity. Purity is not a slogan on the label; it is the reason the label only lists one thing.
The ritual
Taste It Pure First
Before honey goes into tea or onto toast, give it one plain taste. It is the quickest way to learn what a single bloom actually tastes like.
- 1Take a clean, dry spoon and a small amount of honey, about half a teaspoon.
- 2Let it sit on your tongue for a few seconds before swallowing, and notice the first flavor, then the finish.
- 3Sip a little water and try a second honey the same way, so you can compare them side by side.

- Al Safa (الصفا) is Arabic for "the purity" or "the clarity". The word is used for clear water, a cloudless sky and a calm mind.
