Is Honey Keto? Carbs in Honey and How It Fits a Low-Carb Diet
Is honey keto? For most people following a strict ketogenic diet, the honest answer is no. Honey is almost entirely sugar, and a single tablespoon uses up most of a typical daily carb limit on keto. This guide shows the numbers, explains how honey fits looser low-carb diets, and covers alternatives for people avoiding sugar.
Carbs in honey
According to USDA data, honey is about 82 percent carbohydrate by weight, nearly all of it sugar, with the rest mostly water. Here is what that means per serving.
| Amount | Carbs | Sugar | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon (7 g) | About 6 g | About 6 g | About 21 |
| 1 tablespoon (21 g) | About 17 g | About 17 g | About 64 |
| 1/4 cup (85 g) | About 70 g | About 70 g | About 260 |
Why honey does not fit strict keto
A ketogenic diet keeps carbohydrates low enough that the body shifts to burning fat for fuel and producing ketones. Strict versions commonly limit net carbs to about 20 grams a day, and many plans range up to about 50 grams. Honey has no fiber, so its net carbs equal its total carbs. A tablespoon in tea would use most of a 20-gram day.
Raw honey is no different. Raw honey contains the same sugars as processed honey; see raw honey vs regular honey.
Honey on low-carb, not keto
Moderate low-carb diets that allow 50 to 130 grams of carbs a day have more room. A teaspoon of honey, about 6 grams of carbs, can fit as an occasional treat, for example drizzled over plain Greek yogurt or in a vinaigrette. Using a flavorful honey helps: a darker honey gives more taste per drop, so you need less. See honey flavors.
Keto alternatives to honey
People on keto typically use sweeteners that add little or no digestible carbohydrate, such as stevia, monk fruit, erythritol or allulose, alone or in blends. Some brands sell honey-flavored syrups made from these. They do not taste or cook exactly like honey, but they keep carbs low. See honey vs stevia for how stevia compares.
Be wary of products labeled keto honey or sugar-free honey: real honey always contains sugar, so these are honey substitutes, not honey.
Other diets and honey
Honey is allowed in moderation on many paleo diets but not on Whole30 or strict keto. See is honey paleo and is honey whole30. For general sugar guidance, see how much honey per day. People managing diabetes or blood sugar should follow their clinician's advice.
Does a little honey kick you out of ketosis?
It depends on how much and on the rest of your day. A teaspoon of honey, about 6 grams of carbohydrate, may fit within a 20-gram daily budget if the rest of your meals are very low in carbs, but a tablespoon or more usually will not. Honey's sugars are absorbed quickly, so it is not a food that keto dieters typically plan around.
Many keto followers simply reserve honey for days off the diet, or use a few drops in a dressing where the carb count per serving stays small. If ketosis matters for a medical reason, follow the advice of your doctor or dietitian.
Keto-friendly swaps for honey recipes
For glazes and dressings, a sugar-free syrup or a small amount of allulose can replace honey. For honey mustard, try Dijon mustard, olive oil, lemon and a little stevia. For tea, a slice of lemon and a pinch of cinnamon add flavor without sugar. None of these taste exactly like honey, which is why many people on keto miss it most.
