How Much Honey Does a Bee Make in Its Lifetime?

How much honey does a bee make? Far less than most people guess. A single worker honey bee produces only about one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in her whole life. A healthy colony, though, can make a remarkable amount. This guide puts the numbers together, from a single bee to a whole hive and the whole country.

One bee: about 1/12 teaspoon

A summer worker bee spends roughly her first three weeks inside the hive, cleaning, feeding young, making wax and processing nectar. Only in the last two or three weeks of her life does she forage outside. In that time, she brings back nectar many times a day, but each load is small. The National Honey Board estimates that one worker produces about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.

That is why a teaspoon of honey represents the life's work of about a dozen bees.

How much a hive makes

A strong colony in summer can hold 40,000 to 60,000 bees, and together they can bring in a lot of nectar. During a strong nectar flow, a hive can gain several pounds in a single day. Over a season, a colony stores what it needs for winter and, in a good year, a surplus that beekeepers can harvest.

Honey in the US, by the numbers

According to the USDA's honey report, US beekeepers with five or more colonies produced about 115.7 million pounds of honey in 2025 from about 2.4 million colonies, an average of 48 pounds per colony. North Dakota led all states. New York produced about 2.9 million pounds from about 52,000 colonies. See top honey producing states for the full ranking.

Why the numbers vary

Honey yields depend on the weather, the flowers available, the strength of the colony and how the beekeeper manages it. A dry summer can cut nectar flows sharply. Colonies weakened by mites or disease make less. Beekeepers who move hives to big crops, like sunflower or clover, can harvest much more than a backyard hive in a city.

Why bees make so much honey

Bees do not make honey for people. Honey is the colony's food store for times when flowers do not bloom, especially winter. A colony makes as much as it can while nectar is available, which often means more than it needs. Responsible beekeepers harvest only the surplus and leave enough for the bees.
